the word spanish is used for people of former spanish colonies in the US.

@DaBigSun I'm pretty sure that Spanish people, if we wanna talk nationality, are citizens of the country of Spain, regardless of race...
"Spanish" can also refer to anyone born in a former colony of Spain, because these countries share many cultural characteristics with Spain. In fact, Spain allows people from most of their former colonies claim Spanish citizenship quite easily.
