Here are a few facts about Muammar al-Gaddafi's Libya.

Electricity for household use was free.

Domestic water was free.

The price of a liter of gasoline was 0.08 Euros.

Libyan banks gave interest-free loans.

Citizens had no tax liability and no Value Added Tax (VAT).

Medical care was free.

Secondary and university education were free. The literacy rate was over 90%.

There were subsidies on all food bases (one kilogram of pasta purchased at € 1 from a Tunisian producer, the Libyan government sold it to Libyans at € 0.50).

Libya was the last country on the list of indebted countries.

Libya’s debt was 3.3% of GDP (France, 84.5%; US, 88.9%; Japan, 225.8%).

The purchase price of a car was at factory pricing.

Each student studying abroad received a monthly government scholarship of € 627.11.

A graduate student received the average salary of the course chosen profession if they do not find a job.

When a couple married, the “state” paid for the first apartment or house (150 square meters).
