Very unfortunate that this happened. Tonality seems to be what happens when a language stagnates. Words are destroyed, blended together, until you just have a fixed amount of syllables. Reminds me of the destruction of vocabulary for Newspeak in 1984. Ancient greek once used to be tonal but now it has evolved into a toneless language. Hopefully chinese will go back to it's glory days and tonality will be a thing of the past
