lydian is greek tribe

What correlation do the ancient Greek tribes such as the Ionians, Dorians, Aeolians, Phrygians, Lydians, etc. have with the 7 musical modes (of the same names) still used today? Do the scales/modes have similar characteristics with the tribes of which they're named?

I believe that the modes were named after the various Greek peoples because the sounds of different nodes brought about similar emotions and features as the tribe after which it was named.

That being said it's been a while since I looked at my modes and scales that deeply, so someone else might have a better idea.
